Tramadol vs Xanax | How They Compare

Tramadol Vs Xanax

Tramadol is the latest opioid to enter the U.S. In March 1995, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the medicine as a non-schedule narcotic. But, due to continuous reports of drug misuse and abuse, the FDA reclassified the medication as Schedule-4 drug on August 2014. On the other hand, Xanax is a branded version of the medicine Alprazolam. It is considered to be an effective benzodiazepine anxiolytic. This drug was patented in America in October 1969.

In the year 2010, the Forbes magazine marked Xanax as the 11th most prescribed drug in America. The authorities in the U.S. are concerned about the widespread misuse of Xanax due to its very addictive nature. The medication has also been classified by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency as schedule 4 drug.

The Nature of Xanax

Xanax comes below the segment of sedative-hypnotic drugs that includes alcohol and barbiturates. Sedatives are central nervous system depressants. Xanax, which is a benzodiazepine, is usually prescribed by doctors to help patients overcome or handle various conditions. However, if this drug is used for a long period without the permission of a medic or abused, then people would become dependent on the doses. Once they become dependent, quitting will get difficult as the doses are highly addictive. In spite of the addictive nature of Xanax, physicians continue to recommend the drug to the patients.

What is Tramadol?

Tramadol is also sold on the market under brand names, such as Ultram, Rybix ODT, Conzip and Ultram ER. The drug falls under the category of substances known as opiate narcotic analgesics. The medics prescribe Tramadol to treat moderate to severe level of pain. The patients experience the effects of medication after one hour of consumption. Patients generally take 50mg -100mg every 4 to 6 hours according to their prescriptions. For people suffering from chronic pain, such as osteoarthritis, they might consume more frequent doses.

The drug is also referred to as trammies, chill pills and ultras. When a person takes tramadol, it works on two compounds, which are responsible for pain, serotonin and norepinephrine. It reduces pain by decreasing the amount of these compoundsin the brain cells.

Uses of Xanax and Tramadol

The uses of Xanax and Tramadol varies greatly in a way that healthcare experts prescribe Xanax for treating various anxiety disorders, while Tramadol is recommended for treating varying levels of pain. People take Xanax to deal with chemotherapy induced vomiting and nausea, anxiety disorders and panic disorders. But in some countries, especially in Australia, the use of Xanax for treating panic disorders has been curtailed due to studies pointing toward the medicine’s high abuse and addiction potential. Moreover, clinical studies have demonstrated that using Xanax to heal anxiety is only productive for up to 4 months. Beyond this time duration, the patient may develop dependency to the dosages and its benefits might vanish.

Tramadol has been found effective in relieving post-anaesthesia shivering. Keep in mind that patients who have undergone surgery usually experience post-anaesthesia shivering. It occurs frequently to patients who receive general anaesthesia.

Negative Effects of Tramadol and Xanax

Both the medicines are different; hence they tend to affect the body in different ways. Nevertheless, since the main target of these medications is the chemical composition of brain, there may be some adverse effects present in both the drugs, such as:

Xanax could affect infants during lactation and pregnancy adversely. Studies have shown that Xanax use during pregnancy could lead to congenital physical disabilities among the women. Furthermore, a similar medicine, diazepam, has also shown to cause weight loss and lethargy in kids who breastfed from mothers consuming such medicine. It is strictly not advisable for mothers to consume Xanax during lactation and pregnancy period. Consequently, you will require more doses to achieve the same effects. Both the drugs work differently in the body, but as central nervous system depressants, they combine the effect of each other.
